REFLECTION

“I think, therefore I am.”
René Descartes
KNOW THYSELF. You are a living document, a never ending process of your mind thinking its perfect self into being. A Practice of fine tuning, chiseling, and carving yourself into the you, you wish to be. Proper thoughts beget proper results through your emotions, body, spirit, mind, and actions.
The Thinker is one of the most renowned works from the artist Rodin first envisioned in a larger piece called the Gates of Hell, a study and interpretation of the gate Virgil guides Dante through in The Inferno as they enter Hell. A journey into one's mind focused on self-knowledge and reflection. The struggle to find clarity through the Chaos swirling all around.
"lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate"
Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here."
It’s a crazy thing when one steps into one's mind, if you are not careful, who knows where you'll go. Be the fulcrum, the cornerstone of your existence. Well grounded, well focused, with your thoughts crystal clear.
It's OK to fail though, to fall, and get it wrong, sometimes again and again. Like with any heavy machinery, you have to learn how to use your mind. You have to exercise it, work with it, and learn from your mistakes. It's the only way to figure out what works, and what doesn't.
The Thinker was originally called The Poet and represented Dante himself as he contemplated the Fate of the World. Sitting not in a passive state, but on the edge between oblivion and euphoria seeking a path through the torment of his own mind.
The Gates of Hell was conceived in 1880, and though it was never finished in his lifetime, Rodin continued to develop it through the remainder of his life. Many of the elements were explored as other sculptures, especially this one.
Standing over twelve feet tall, the gates beneath the thinker intimidate the viewer with a warning, the only way out of the chaos in your thoughts, is through.
