Book 5: SOPHIA

Chapter 2: Pachyderm

JOY

$5 STICKERS

"Pleasure is always derived from something outside you, whereas joy arises from within.” — Maya Angelou

Joy is a simple flame that warms the heart and fuels the soul. So easy to ignite, so hard to find the courage to do so when we need it the most. It's not something we pull in from the outside, but rather dig deep inside and will it to life. Laughing fills the body with the best Oxygen.

In Terry Pratchett's Discworld, there is the Myth of the Fifth Elephant that once stood with the other Four holding up the world atop the shell of the Great Turtle A'Tuin as they travel through the cosmos. Some say she fell off into space, others tell the tale that she climbed up into Uberwald and fell asleep and over time melted into the huge deposit of fat for the world to mine and profit, ultimately becoming a source of fuel to feed everyone's hearths. No one really knows, but over time, the term Fifth Elephant has come to mean, "a thing that doesn't exist."

Maybe she just got bored, I mean how exciting can it be when your whole existence is meant to just hold up the world. Does a table really need five legs? She probably just wanted to live a life, to find joy, and jumped off at the first distraction that came along.

Here, she is seen with two galaxies to play with thinking they were toys. After all, how much fun is a ball to a pachyderm? Even better, two of them.  Sometimes you gotta do whatchya gotta do, and honestly, who's going to go and get her? A Pachyderm Playing with Two Galaxies (the full title of this piece) is not something I'd ever get in the middle of. Let her be, look how happy she is.

This painting is a portrait of an actual elephant living at an elephant sanctuary in Tennessee. She is a circus survivor and living out his best life until the sun finally sets. His name has been redacted to protect her from being deported.
